While much of America was playing some version of Madmen, the Hippies were on a back-to-the-land quest across the entire country – maybe it was an American expression of a world wide shift. They wanted to reconnect with Gaia, sync up with the natural rhythms of the world and cosmos, grow food, experiment with collective communities, re-establish their inner knowledge through experimentation and the conscious use of psychedelics, but perhaps most importantly they wanted to keep the common good in mind with their enterprise.
Seems like a fair amount of failure and stereotypes have come from those social experiments. But much truth has come out as well. Co-operatives, Organics, Sustainable Farming – all concepts that have been around throughout the 20th century and earlier, were embraced and put at the center of the Hippy culture and endeavor.
